Exile on Büyükada

Documentary film of Trotsky's years of Turkish exile on the island of Prinkipo. Based on Isaac Deutscher's The prophet outcast. Narrated by Vanessa Redgrave. Slow moving, haunting in tone, it nevertheless gives a flavour of this period of Trotsky's life, but is presented as a personal tragedy, rather than an episode his struggle to create a new revolutionary force, and turn the tide of reaction sweeping Europe. Still worth watching...

The assassination of Leon Trotsky

"On the 24 September*, commenting on the reaction to Trotsky's assassination, the old revolutionary, soldier of the revolution, father of Mexican Marxism, champion of democratic rights, Francisco Zamora, wrote these lines which we would like to serve as Trotsky's epitaph in this book:

I'm not a member and I've never been a member of the Fourth International; I have no knowledge of its activities; I believe, however, that Stalin is the most repugnant and the most malignant of traitors ever to plague the cause of the proletariat, and that no human being who is mentally and morally healthy can continue to be a Stalinist after the catalogue of crimes, swindles, baseness and falsification of facts and ideas perpetrated by this sinister individual; I believe that what has survived to the present of the October revolution, despite Stalin and his gang, must be saved by the elimination of Stalinism, which misled, decapitated and disorientated the world working class, at the very moment when it had the greatest need of its consciousness and certitude. If that's what makes you a Trotskyist, then I'm a Trotskyist, and proud to be one, because in every epoch and in whatever society, it will always be more worthy to take the side of the treacherously slain victim than to serve as lackey and apologist to his all-powerful executioner."

Trotsky, Pierre Broue, 1988, p936
